Founded in 2003, The Intan is a Peranakan heritage home-museum borne out of one man’s passion for Peranakan culture. Founder and owner, Alvin Yapp, promotes Peranakan history and culture by sharing his treasure trove and imparting expertise amassed from over 20 years of collection and study.
The proud winner of Singapore Museum Roundtable Awards Best Overall Experience, The Intan (meaning ‘rose-cut diamond’ in Malay) houses an impressive array of precious antiques, traditional attires, rare furnishings and pristine serving pieces. With Alvin personally conducting the tours, he shares an invaluable Peranakan perspective that only an insider and avid collector could impart.
The Peranakan culture is a unique, hybrid, rich and colourful heritage that leaves many fascinated. The Malay term ‘Peranakan’ means ‘locally born’, also known as the “Straits Chinese”, they are descendants of Chinese traders who settled in Malacca, Java and Sumatra, as early as the 14th century.
